This year we are taking a break.

It has been five years since we ran our first climate camp. Since 2021, we have held a camp each year, laying siege to fossil fuel infrastructure, rebuilding our movement, connecting struggles, and laying the groundwork for mass direct action against those destroying our planet.

This year, we are taking a break.

We will not hold a camp this summer, taking time for a wee pause to regroup, reflect and recharge. We will think about what went right, what we didn’t achieve, how we can change our strategy to make the most impact. We need to make sure how we organise is sustainable for our organisers, and that we put our efforts towards the best tactics in a rapidly shifting political era.

From Mossmorran to Grangemouth to Aberdeen, we have been at the forefront of the struggle against the fossil fuel industry, and some of the places we targeted have now been shut down, albeit in an unjust way that leaves workers and communities stranded while fossil capitalism fled with the profits. Other places such as St Fittick’s Park in Torry are still under attack by fossil fuel executives, and new climate injustices like AI Data-Centres appear across Scotland.

The climate crisis is worsening before our very eyes. Just weeks ago, climate scientists warned that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) faces a much more significant risk of collapse than previously thought due to global warming. One of the major global tipping points, the collapse of the stream not only risks turning the Atlantic from a carbon sink into a source of further emissions, but also means civilisational devastation for Scotland and most of Europe.

Meanwhile, fossil fuel companies again rake in record profits from the biggest crisis fossil capitalism has faced - our oil and gas dependency again spike our heating bills, food shops because fascists and theocrats are at war. Still, governments refuse to take charge to finally phase out our fossil fuel dependency and protect people and planet.

Scotland needs a militant climate movement now more than ever.

While there won’t be a camp this year, this does not mean that we stop organising.
